Frequently Asked Questions

What is the proper tension for my blade?

Most carbon steel bandsaw blade manufacturers recommend 15,000 PSI as the proper tension for bandsaw blades. The EZtension gauge makes it easy to set this tension every time you change blades or adjust tension.

Will the EZtension fit my bandsaw?

The EZtension gauge comes in two sizes: original and MINI. The original size requires access to at least 6 inches of blade, normally between the guides on saws with at least 6 inches of resaw capacity. It’s designed to accurately tension blades from 1/4-inch to 3/4-inch.

If your bandsaw has less than 6 inches of resaw capacity, you will want the MINI EZtension. The MINI fits bandsaws with 4 inches of resaw capacity. It’s designed for bench-top bandsaws and will tension blades from 1/8-inch to 3/8-inch.

Does the MINI EZtension work on large bandsaws?

Yes, the MINI EZtension will work on any bandsaw with a resaw capacity of 4 inches or greater but can only tension blades up to 3/8 inches in width.

I read the part above about the MINI only going up to 3/8-inch, but what if I REALLY want to use a 1/2-inch blade on my little bandsaw?

If you use the Highland Woodworking Woodslicer blade and set the MINI for a 3/8-inch, the MINI will set the tension to approximately 13,000 PSI (the Woodslicer has a thinner blade body: .022” instead of .025”). Tensioning a 1/2-inch blade on a 10 or 9-inch bandsaw will take over 325 pounds of force. That’s a lot of force for your benchtop bandsaw! (see the Timber Wolf section below for another way to run a 1/2-inch blade on your benchtop bandsaw)

I use a Timber Wolf bandsaw blade that recommends lower tension than normal blades. Will the EZtension work with that?

Yes, to set the tension on a Timber Wolf blade (3,000 to 5,000 PSI lower than normal blades), use the next smallest blade setting on the EZtension gauge. For instance, if you use a 1/2” wide Timber Wolf blade, set your EZtension gauge to the 3/8” blade size. When you tension your saw, the EZtension gauge will release at a lower tension, and your blade will be properly tensioned according to the Timber Wolf guidelines.

Does the EZension work with all bandsaw blades?

No, the EZtension gauge is designed to work with carbon steel bandsaw blades. It will not properly tension bi-metal blades due to their different magnetic properties. Many carbide-tipped blades are based on bi-metal blade bodies.

How do I know when my blade has reached proper tension?

Attach the gauge to your blade and begin applying tension using the tension wheel on your bandsaw. When the blade reaches the proper tension, one of the magnets will detach from it.

How do I care for my EZtension gauge?

Your EZtension gauge is built to last a lifetime. Proper care and handling will ensure that your gauge will continue to function without issue:

  • Don’t drop your gauge; the rare earth magnets are fragile and may break.

  • Don’t store it in direct sunlight. Doing so could cause the color to fade and could overheat the gauge (see next item below).

  • Don’t store it in an extremely hot environment (above 95F).

What if my gauge breaks?

EZtension gauges are 100% guaranteed. If you have any problems with any part of your gauge, please get in touch. Email: help@eztension.com

I have the original EZtension and want to tension a 3/16” blade. Is that possible?

Yes! Set the EZtension for a 1/4” blade and then extend the center fulcrum screw an additional 1/4 turn so that it sticks out a bit further than it did for the 1/4” setting.
